The 30 by 30 Travel Project: Update!

To be completely honest, the project that I had announced back in February, the 30 by 30 Travel Project, has been off to a much slower start than I had anticipated or would have liked. I’ve also been lacking motivation the past few weeks in the blogging department of travel blogging. However, with warmer weather finally here in the United States, the project will be picking up considerable speed as spring turns to summer.

I wanted to give a brief update as to which UNESCO World Heritage Sites and US National Park Service Sites I’ve visited over the past few months, as well as give a preview into the sites I will be visiting in the near future.

Sites Visited

UNESCO World Heritage Sites

Since announcing the 30 by 30 Travel Project, I’ve visited a grand total of zero UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Zip. Nada. Nil. Zilch. Obviously this is somewhat of a problem, as I still need to visit 17 World Heritage Sites by my deadline at the end of August.

US National Park Service Sites

After commencing this current travel project, I’ve visited seven National Park Service Sites in the United States – all of which have been within my home state of New York.

Over the Memorial Day weekend, I will be driving down to Charlottesville, Virginia to visit my 14th UNESCO World Heritage Site – Monticello and the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. This will also be my first time in Virginia, adding a new US state to my travel resumé.

A few days after returning from Virginia, I will be driving down towards New York City to catch a flight out of Newark (EWR) to Madrid, Spain. This will be an extremely busy week, as I plan on visiting seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites in central Spain.

  • Historic City of Toledo
  • Monastery and Site of the Escurial, Madrid
  • Old Town of Ávila with its Extra-Muros Churches
  • Old Town of Segovia and its Aqueduct
  • University and Historic Precinct of Alcalá de Henares

After the whirlwind week in Spain, no visits to World Heritage Sites are set in stone… yet. I have the week of the Fourth of July wide open, so I plan on utilizing that time properly. The UNESCO World Heritage Site portion of the 30 by 30 Travel Project will be considerably more difficult than the National Park Service portion.

While in Virginia, I intend to visit Shenandoah National Park. No other trips to National Park Service Sites are finalized at this point. However, I plan on making several trips around the Northeast this summer, so reaching my goal of 30 sites should be easily attainable.
