One of the often overlooked parts of the tragic September 11th attacks is the crash site of United Airlines Flight 93 in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. Located 60 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, Flight 93 National Memorial commemorates the crash and the victims who bravely tried to stop the hijackers. Unfortunately, they would all perish. However, the passengers were successful in preventing the terrorists from reaching their intended target. This target was believed to be the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C.
Today, the memorial to the Flight 93 tragedy is operated by the National Park Service. The memorial includes the visitor center, the Wall of Names and the Tower of Voices structure. In addition, the boulder in the nearby field marks the site of the crash.
Danielle and I visited back in July 2020, during one of our many trips to Pittsburgh. Truly, it was an incredibly powerful and sobering experience.
